Privacy Policy

ReadLingo ("we", "our", "us") is a Chrome browser extension that helps users learn new languages by translating words, creating flashcards, and reviewing vocabulary. This privacy policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and your rights.

1. What data we collect

Account information

When you create an account, we collect basic profile information through our authentication provider (Clerk), including your email address and display name. This is required to manage your account and provide premium features.

Saved words and vocabulary data

We store the words and translations you save while using the extension. This includes:

• The original word and its translation
• The source and target languages you selected
• Custom deck names and color settings
• Spaced repetition review progress (intervals, review dates)

Usage settings and preferences

We store your extension preferences, such as selected theme (dark/light), language pairs, and notification settings. These are stored locally and, for premium users, synced to our server.

3. How data is stored

Local storage (Free users)

For free users, all vocabulary data and settings are stored locally in your browser using Chrome's built-in chrome.storage API. This data never leaves your device unless you upgrade to premium and enable cloud sync.

Cloud storage (Premium users)

Premium users' vocabulary data is synced to our server hosted on Cloudflare Workers with data stored in Cloudflare D1 (a serverless SQL database). This enables cross-device sync and data backup. Data is transmitted over HTTPS and stored securely.

4. Third-party services

ReadLingo uses the following third-party services to provide its functionality:

Google Translate

We use Google Translate to provide word translations. When you translate a word, that word and the selected language pair are sent to Google's translation API. Google's privacy policy applies to this data. No other context or browsing data is sent.

Clerk (Authentication)

We use Clerk for user authentication and account management. Clerk processes your email address and login credentials according to their privacy policy.

Stripe (Payments)

Premium subscriptions are processed through Stripe. We do not store your credit card information. Stripe handles all payment processing according to their privacy policy and PCI compliance standards.

AI Services

AI-powered example sentences are generated using third-party AI services. When you request example sentences, only the word and its target language are sent. No other personal data is included in these requests.

5. How we use your data

We use the data we collect solely to:

• Provide translation and vocabulary learning features
• Save and sync your flashcards and study progress
• Manage your account and premium subscription
• Improve the extension's functionality

We do not sell, rent, or share your personal data with third parties for advertising or marketing purposes.

6. Your rights

You have the following rights regarding your data:

• Access: You can view all your saved words and data within the extension at any time.
• Export: Premium users can export their vocabulary data (including Anki-compatible format).
• Deletion: You can delete individual words, entire decks, or all data from within the extension. You can also request full account deletion by contacting us.
• Portability: You can export your data and take it to another service at any time.

To delete your account and all associated data from our servers, contact us at the email below. We will process your request within 30 days.

7. Data retention

We retain your data for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we will remove all associated data from our servers within 30 days. Local data stored in your browser via chrome.storage will remain until you uninstall the extension or clear it manually.

8. Security

We take reasonable measures to protect your data, including:

• All data transmission uses HTTPS encryption
• Server infrastructure is hosted on Cloudflare's secure global network
• Authentication is handled by Clerk, an industry-standard auth provider
• Payment processing is handled by Stripe with full PCI compliance

9. Children's privacy

ReadLingo is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can remove it.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify users through the extension or by email. The "effective date" at the top of this page indicates when the policy was last updated.
